Independent Living
We offer four core services:
Information and Referral – We provide current information on disability issues and identify local, state and federal resources. SICIL also refers to other agencies when necessary. Click on counties served for a listing of resources in your area.
Independent Living Skills Training – SICIL will help to get you in contact with organizations and businesses that teach household management, self-care, interpersonal communication skills, mobility, equipment maintenance, consumer rights and more.
Peer Counseling – We strive to maximize the leadership, empowerment, independence and the productivity of individuals by providing experienced counselors who have similar disabilities, knowledge and skills. Our head peer counselor, Bob Hughes, has many years of experience and a plethora of knowledge to help you. Contact Bob here.
Advocacy – We advocate for people with disabilities and for systems change with state and federal government. We help establish personal goals and enable resources that allow individuals to maintain control over their own lives. SICIL also advocated for individuals by educating business and government representatives on the abilities and needs of people with disabilities.
SICIL’s IL Center also offers other helpful programs:
Education – Outreach activities educate members of the community on the needs and abilities of people who have disabilities and address the school system’s educational needs for children with disabilities. Recreation – Activities such as SICIL’s annual fishing outings, promote accessibility and inclusion for all people with disabilities. View our events calendar for upcoming recreational activities.
Transportation – We promote the use of accessible transportation to all people in Indiana. Go to our counties served page to find out if your county has an accessible transportation option.
Housing – We promote accessible housing and provide awareness programs for realtors and contracts that reflect the marketplace for accessible housing. Click here for more information about housing.
